Ascension Parish Clerk of Court

Bridget Hanna serves as the Ascension Parish Clerk of Court. The main office is at 828 S. Irma Blvd. in Gonzales. Ascension Parish is unusual in that the Clerk of Court operates three separate office locations -- Gonzales, Donaldsonville, and Prairieville -- serving a parish that has grown rapidly over the past two decades. Knowing which office location is most convenient for you can save time, especially for in-person searches or document filings.

Reach the clerk at (225) 621-0900 or by email at bhanna@ascensionclerk.com. For questions about conveyances, mortgages, UCC filings, marriage licenses, online access, or passports, the specific contact is Kesslie Carbo at kcarbo@ascensionclerk.com. The clerk's website at ascensionclerk.com has current information on all services and the ACCESS online system.

Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. All three office locations follow this schedule. If you are not sure which location to visit for your specific need, call the main number in Gonzales first. Staff can direct you to the right office.

ACCESS: Ascension Parish Online Records

The Ascension Clerk of Court Electronic Search System -- known as ACCESS -- is the parish's online portal for property and court records. It covers mortgage records, conveyance records, maps, civil records, criminal records, traffic records, and marriage records. For property research specifically, the mortgage and conveyance indexes are the most relevant. You can search by party name or document type and pull up images of recorded instruments.

ACCESS is available on a monthly or day-pass basis. Check the clerk's website for current subscription rates. This is a full-featured system with good coverage of historical records. Title researchers and attorneys who do regular work in Ascension Parish will find it efficient. Day passes work well for occasional one-off searches.

Under La. R.S. 44:1, property records are public. Anyone can use ACCESS to search them. You do not need a professional license or a stated reason. The eClerks LA statewide portal also indexes Ascension Parish records and lets you run free name searches. Use eClerks to identify documents, then pull full images through ACCESS or in person at one of the clerk's offices.

Louisiana's recording doctrine under La. Civ. Code art. 3338 means that unrecorded instruments are void against third parties. For Ascension Parish specifically, where property values and transaction volume have grown fast, keeping on top of recorded documents is important. A clean title search through ACCESS or in person at the clerk's office is essential before any property transfer.

Ascension Parish Assessor

Kris R. Babin serves as the Ascension Parish Assessor. The office is at 828 S. Irma Blvd. in Gonzales, the same address as the main clerk office. Reach the assessor at (225) 621-0901 or at kbabin@ascensionassessor.com. The assessor's website is at ascensionassessor.com.

The assessor uses the Schneider Geospatial Beacon platform for online property search and mapping. This is a capable GIS tool that lets you look up parcels by address, owner name, or parcel ID. You can see the assessed value, legal description, ownership history, and a map of the parcel. The Beacon platform is free to use for basic lookups. For Ascension Parish's GIS mapping, the parish also maintains a portal at ascensionparishmaps.azurewebsites.net, which shows parcel boundaries layered with other geographic data.

Under La. Const. art. VII, sec. 18, residential property and land in Ascension Parish is assessed at 10% of fair market value. Commercial and other property is assessed at 15%. The Open Book period runs each year from August 15 through September 15. During this window, property owners can review their assessed value and discuss changes with the assessor's office. If you disagree with your assessment, the Open Book period is when you must act.

Appeals beyond the assessor must be submitted by certified mail or in person -- email alone is not a valid form of appeal in Ascension Parish. The Louisiana Tax Commission handles appeals that cannot be resolved at the parish level. Their site at latax.state.la.us has appeal procedures and contact information.

Property Tax Payments in Ascension Parish

Ascension Parish property taxes can be paid online through snstaxpayments.com/ascension. This portal accepts electronic payments and shows the current balance owed on a parcel. The screenshot below shows the Ascension Parish online tax payment interface, where you can look up your parcel and pay by credit card or electronic check. Visit snstaxpayments.com/ascension to access payments directly.

Ascension Parish online property tax payment portal

The tax payment portal is separate from the clerk's records system but is an important part of the full picture of a property's status -- unpaid taxes result in tax liens that appear in the clerk's records.

Unpaid property taxes eventually lead to a tax sale. In Louisiana, the property owner has three years to redeem the property after a tax sale by paying the back taxes plus costs and interest. Tax sale certificates are recorded in the Clerk of Court's records and will show up in a title search. Any serious property research in Ascension Parish should include a check for tax sale certificates and redemptions, not just conveyances and mortgages.

Under La. R.S. 44:411, permanent records like tax sale certificates and conveyances must be kept indefinitely. You can search them going back many years through the ACCESS system or in person at the clerk's office.
